Chronicle In the words of the Eagle: Over the entrance to the "Schwarzer Adler" hangs the inn's historic sign, its double eagle reminiscent of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. In the early 16th century, "Emperor Maximilian's" stables were located here. In the surrounding area craftsmen busily plied their trades, for example silversmiths, who wrought works of art from precious metal. The medieval industrial zone very soon evolved to an upper-class neighborhood for prominent Tyrolean aristocratic families. Their residences still line the streets. Even the "Schwarzer Adler" was originally a patrician home. Run as an inn since the early 17th century, the "Schwarzer Adler" reached its largest expanse under Emperor Joseph II, who was known for his secularization campaign: part of the neighboring Capuchin monastery was leased to the inn and the refectory was promptly converted to a pub. Whether a thirsty monk occasionally dropped by is not mentioned in the monastery's annals... At the beginning of the 20th century Franz Ultsch took over the "Schwarzer Adler" (Black Eagle). The then middle-class inn was leased for some years, until the mid-1950s when Helmut Ultsch took over its management. Trained in the hotel and catering business, he and his wife Margarethe adapted and expanded the "Schwarzer Adler." Above all, it was at this time that the restaurant became known throughout Austria and beyond for its excellent food. It was also at this time that the "Schwarzer Adler" was accepted into the exclusive ranks of the "Romantik Hotels and Restaurants." In the late 1980s Harald Ultsch, one of four children, took the Ultsch family into its fourth generation at the "Schwarzer Adler". After obtaining a university degree in business and working abroad for several years, particularly in the United States, he applied himself to the historic cellars with their impressive cross vault, the Andreas Hofer Saal with its antique paintings and the many authentic and enticing Tyrolean dining rooms. Gastronomy of the highest class has always been a hallmark of the "Schwarzer Adler." Here, too, the variety of public and private rooms is notable: in two steps, 1985 and 1999, the inn became a handsome hotel. Sonja Ultsch with her knowledge of the fashion industry set new accents, which proved to be remarkable and successful, indeed. At her sure hand the interior design and decoration of the restaurant and hotel rooms set a new standard for hotels. And the "Schwarzer Adler will continue in the Ultsch family. After all, several of the three Ultsch children are interested in running the hotel, even if they have to wait a few years yet... With the end of the 20th century the neighborhood around the Schwarzer Adler"changed again. The former army barracks across the street gave way to Innsbruck University's School of Social and Economic Sciences, a flagship of modern architecture.
