| History and position: In the heart of Emilia Romagna, Bologna has always been a place among the richest in Italy for history and culture, especially concerning to the Etruscan civilisation. The Villanovan culture (taking its name from Villanova, a borough a few kilometres from, where the first discoveries were made, in 1853) dating back to 9th century b. C., is in fact recognised as the earliest period of the Etruscan civilisation. The archaeological discoveries of Villanova reveal that settlements took place quite suddenly in the area, where several groups of Etruscan people from the Tyrrhenian Etruria moved, attracted by the fertility of the Po valley. Bologna, then named Felsina, controlled a vast territory full of little rural settlements and became an important centre of commerce between the Tyrrhenian area and northern Italy. The vestiges of the Villanova civilisation (and of the following domination) are kept at the Archaeological Museum of Bologna. Among them, the famous and precious Askos Benacci, (from the Greek term askos = leather bottle), a vase used for storing perfumes and ointments; the vase has the shape of a bull with a big rounded belly, a long neck, big curved bull horns and a handle in the shape of a horse ridden by a knight wearing his helmet and carrying a shield on his shoulders. Nowadays, Bologna is a town where old traditions get on well with the fast and dynamic rhythm of modern life and Villanova is a place strategically located in the hinterland; from there, you can easily reach the both the centre and the A1 motorway, important crossroads for the traffic coming from all directions, as well as Adriatica motorway, leading to the renowned seaside resorts of the Adriatic coast. Only one kilometre from the motorway exit of Bologna San Lazzaro, the Jolly Hotel Villanova, second hotel of the chain in the chief town, is characterised by a modern and linear design and by top-quality materials.
